As you may have heard your esthetician or provider tell you all summer – you can’t have laser hair removal done with a tan. With the changing of the leaves and the turning of the season comes the perfect time to rid yourself of pesky, persistent hair. Even though laser hair removal is one of the most popular spa treatments for women and men, there are still common misconceptions about the treatment options. Below are some common myths and the truth behind them.
Myth: You only need one treatment and your hair is gone forever.
Fact: As much as we wish that were true, laser hair removal is much like any other non-invasive aesthetic treatment – it takes multiple treatments to reach your goal. That said, patients do see a significant reduction in hair growth after one treatment, and the reduction becomes more pronounced with each treatment (roughly 10 to 15 percent each time). The number of treatments required to completely stop hair growth depends on the patient and their hair type. This is why we recommend every patient have a complimentary consultation before beginning treatment, so they have a realistic idea of what is required to totally remove hair in the desired area.
Myth: You won’t experience any discomfort during the treatment.
Fact: Everyone has different tolerance levels, so some patients find the treatment to be very manageable, while others experience discomfort. In the consultation prior to treatment, we will help a patient understand what the procedure will feel like, and potentially recommend the patient to take 1-2 ibuprofen prior to laser hair removal.
Myth: The treatment is too expensive.
Fact: As with all of our procedures and treatments, we work with our patients and their budget to establish a realistic treatment plan. While treatment costs can add up, it is broken up into different treatments that can be spread out over time, giving patients time to save and plan ahead.
Myth: All hair colors are a fit for laser hair removal.
Fact: Laser technology works by targeting the pigment in the hair, meaning that light hair (blonde, ginger, gray) can’t be picked up. This makes treatment unsuccessful for those with lighter hair colors.
