Sofwave PureImpact
Sofwave™ PureImpact™ is a non-surgical muscle toning treatment for the abdomen, obliques, arms, back, calves, thighs, and buttocks. It uses electrical muscle stimulation to contract your muscles, strengthening and firming them over a series of sessions. Also known as PureImpact VIP™ by Sofwave, it can work several muscle groups in one 30-minute visit with no downtime.
You eat well and stay active, yet your stomach, arms, or thighs look softer than they used to. Muscle tone naturally fades with age and weight loss, and exercise alone does not always bring it back. PureImpact gives those muscles a focused workout while you lie back and relax.
At Cosmetic Enhancement Center of New England, we offer PureImpact at our Portland location, serving patients from Falmouth, Waterville, and throughout Maine. For 30+ years, we have helped patients find the right treatment for their goals. PureImpact joins our non-surgical body contouring menu with one focus: rebuilding muscle tone.

PureImpact belongs to a category of treatments known as EMS body sculpting. EMS stands for electrical muscle stimulation. Your provider places small pads on the skin over the muscles being treated. The pads connect to the device, which sends gentle electrical pulses through them. Those pulses copy the signal your brain sends during exercise, so the muscle tightens and releases on its own.
The FDA has cleared PureImpact as a prescription device. Its cleared uses include toning the abdomen and strengthening muscles in the arms, thighs, and buttocks. It is a cosmetic conditioning treatment for healthy muscles, not a therapy for an injury or medical condition.
Many muscle stimulation devices repeat a single contraction throughout a session. PureImpact uses PlyoPulse™ three-directional stimulation, which changes the direction and rhythm of each contraction. The pattern is modeled on plyometric exercises, the quick, explosive moves behind squat jumps and burpees. The varied pattern is designed to engage the large muscles you can see and the smaller stabilizing muscles around them. It is also designed to keep your muscles challenged from one session to the next.
Research on PureImpact itself supports this approach. In a randomized controlled study of 38 healthy adults, treatment improved muscle performance and endurance across all four standardized tests. Those gains held through the four-week follow-up, and treated participants also reported a more positive view of their bodies.

What Body Areas Can PureImpact Treat?
PureImpact can treat the following areas:
- Abdomen: Firms the stomach muscles for a tighter, more defined midsection.
- Obliques: Tones the muscles along the sides of your waist.
- Arms: Tones the biceps and triceps in the upper arms.
- Back: Strengthens the muscles of the upper and lower back.
- Thighs: Strengthens the muscles in the front and back of the legs.
- Calves: Tones and firms the muscles in the lower legs.
- Buttocks: Tones and firms the glute muscles.
You do not have to pick one area per visit. The system can treat up to six muscle groups at the same time. Your provider can work your abdomen and thighs in the same 30-minute appointment, which saves you return trips.
How Is PureImpact Different From EMSCULPT neo?
We hear this question often, and the short answer is that each device does a different job. Here is how the two compare:
- PureImpact: Uses electrical pulses delivered through pads to tone muscle. It does not reduce fat, and it can treat several areas at once.
- EMSCULPT neo®: Combines electromagnetic muscle stimulation with radiofrequency heat. It tones muscle and reduces fat in the same session, so it often suits patients who want both.
Not sure which fits? Your provider will walk you through the options at your consultation, and some patients combine two treatments.
PureImpact tends to suit healthy adults at or near a stable weight who want firmer, stronger muscles in stubborn areas. Good candidates often include:
- Adults noticing age-related changes. Strength fades with age, partly because nerves activate muscle less efficiently over time. EMS sends those muscles a direct signal to contract.
- Patients losing weight on GLP-1 medications. In one study of semaglutide patients, lean mass dropped about three kilograms over the first seven months before leveling off. If you take GLP-1 medications through our practice, muscle toning can be a helpful addition to your plan.
- Active people who have hit a plateau. Patients who exercise but struggle to build definition in certain areas can add PureImpact as an extra workout.

Who Should Not Have PureImpact?
PureImpact is not safe for everyone. It is not recommended if you:
- Have a pacemaker, defibrillator, or other implanted electronic device.
- Have metal plates, screws, or silicone implants in the treatment area.
- Are pregnant, have epilepsy, or are in active treatment for certain medical conditions.
Your complimentary consultation includes a health history review. That way, we confirm PureImpact is safe for you before you book treatment.
How Do I Prepare for PureImpact?
- Avoid alcohol, fish oil, and ibuprofen before treatment.
- Drink plenty of water before you arrive.
- Skip heavy meals in the hour before your appointment.
- Arrive with clean skin, free of lotions and oils, in the treatment areas.
- Remove metal jewelry and wear comfortable clothing that gives easy access to the areas being treated.
What Happens During a PureImpact Session?
- Setup: Your provider cleans the treatment areas and places the pads over the target muscles.
- Warm-up: The device starts at a low intensity, and your provider raises it gradually to a level you find comfortable.
- Treatment: For 30 minutes, you feel a rhythmic tightening and releasing. It can feel unusual at first, then easy to relax through. It should never feel painful.
- Back to your day: When your session ends, you can drive yourself home and return to work right away.
A typical treatment series is four sessions, twice a week over two weeks.
What Is Recovery Like After PureImpact?
PureImpact involves no anesthesia, no scarring, and no downtime. After each session:
- Continue avoiding alcohol, fish oil, and ibuprofen immediately after treatment.
- Drink plenty of water.
- Return to normal activity right away, including exercise if you feel up to it.
- Expect mild muscle soreness, similar to the day after a hard workout, that fades within a day or two.
Call us if soreness is severe or lasts more than a few days.
When Will I See Results From PureImpact?
Results build gradually because muscle adapts over weeks, not days. You may notice firmer treated areas in the weeks after your fourth session, and improvement can continue after that. Results vary per patient.
Your diet and activity level play a large role in how your muscles look. PureImpact works best alongside healthy habits, not instead of them.

What Else Do Patients Ask About PureImpact?
How much does Sofwave PureImpact cost?
Visit us for a consultation for pricing. Treatment plans are tailored to each patient’s individual needs, including how many areas you want to treat. We also offer financing through CareCredit®.
Is Sofwave PureImpact the same as Sofwave skin tightening?
No. Both come from Sofwave, but they are separate devices that treat different layers. Sofwave skin tightening uses ultrasound energy to firm the skin of the face, brows, under the chin, and neck. PureImpact works on muscle in the body. Because they address different concerns, the two fit easily into one treatment plan.
How long do PureImpact results last?
Like gym results, muscle tone fades when the muscle stops working. Maintenance sessions every two to three months after your first series of four help hold your results. Patients who stay active often go longer between visits.
