Microneedling in Portland, ME

Microneedling is a cosmetic technique that uses the body’s own healing abilities to rejuvenate the skin and improve overall skin health. At Cosmetic Enhancement Center of New England, we are proud to offer microneedling to the residents of Portland and the nearby communities of Maine.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling in Portland, MEMicroneedling is a skin treatment that activates the production of collagen to revitalize the skin. It can be performed on the face or other areas of the body. At Cosmetic Enhancement Center of New England, we use a handheld device called the SkinPen to make micro-injuries to the first layer of the skin, triggering the body’s natural healing process.

What are the Benefits of Microneedling?

Microneedling has been proven to provide benefits that include:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne scars
  • Enlarged pores
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Sun damage
  • Stretch marks or surgery scars

How Does it Work?

  • Step 1: We will apply a topical numbing cream to the area to reduce discomfort. The provider will also discuss what you can expect during and after treatment.
  • Step 2: A hyaluronic acid serum or PRP, depending on the microneedling treatment you choose, will be applied to the skin before the treatment to help with inflammation and protect the skin against abrasion.
  • Step 3: The provider will use the SkinPen to gently pierce the top layers of the skin in an automated, stamp-liked motion. Typically, three or more passes are needed.

Can PRP be Added to Microneedling?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP), a concentration of your body’s anti-aging nutrients, can be applied to the treatment area to speed up the production of collagen. This addition can be incredibly beneficial in the healing process and increase the overall results. Learn more about the Vampire Facial here.

What is the Downtime for Microneedling?

There is minimal downtime, but side effects include minor redness and swelling. This usually lasts up to 24 hours. Your provider will send you home with detailed post-treatment instructions, including what skincare products to avoid, and how to take care of your skin.

How is Microneedling Different than Dermarolling?

Micropens create a precise, vertical action, allowing for more control and consistency. With Dermarollers, the roller does not create uniform micro-injuries, and can actually lead to micro-tears due to the angled way they enter the skin. Another major difference is who is performing the treatment. Dermarollers can be purchased online and used at home. Microneedle pens (like the SkinPen) are required to be used by licensed aestheticians and there is more control over the depth of the needle penetration which allows for more customized treatments.
