What are the flanks, and why is it so hard to get rid of fat there?

CoolSculpting® in Portland, ME

CoolSculpting® in Portland, ME

Also known as the love handles, the flanks are the area under the bra strap resulting in a smooth appearance and a more defined waist. The flanks are a common trouble area for both men and women, but why is that? We broke down the top reasons why fat loss in this area is so difficult.

Lack of Use

When in the gym, common exercises target the abs or the glutes…but not many people are focused on their rear deltoids. When muscles go unused, they lose strength, which leads to a loss in tone and definition.

Bad Posture

Oftentimes, the way we hold ourselves makes our fat present different. Head to a mirror. Look at yourself standing upright, shoulder back, chest out. Now, slouch a little bit. Makes a big difference, huh? Poor posture can emphasize the fat you have. Standing tall will help pull the love handles flat, making you look leaner.

Excessive Fat

To boil it down, extra pounds can be carried in different places for different people. Some body types are prone to carry weight in their thighs, others in their abdomen. Those last few pounds can be near impossible to get rid of with diet and exercise. Not to mention, hormones come into play as people age, which can make weight loss event harder.

So, what are the options?

At CEC, we are experts in CoolSculpting. CoolSculpting is a non-surgical body contouring treatment that uses a process known as cryolipolysis to freeze and eliminate fat that is resistant to diet and exercise. It works by bringing fat cells to a temperature at which they freeze and metabolize through the body’s natural processes.

Are the results permanent?

Once the cells are gone, they are gone. However, it is possible to gain weight, so we recommend that our patients maintain their results with a healthy, active lifestyle.

Brrreaking Down the Science Behind CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting® in Portland, ME

CoolSculpting® in Portland, ME

CoolSculpting is one of our most popular and sought-after treatments at CEC. Our practice was the first to offer the treatment in Maine, and now is proud to have four machines…the most in any single practice in the state!

The appeal of CoolSculpting is simple – freeze away your fat cells with zero needles or downtime. It’s an innovative way to contour your body by freezing unwanted fat, and with more than 6 million CoolSculpting treatments performed worldwide, it’s catching on like wildfire (or shall we say wild snow)! But just how does it work? Science is a dish best served cold, so today we are walking through the “how” of CoolSculpting!

Icy Beginnings

CoolSculpting began in 2005, originally founded by a company called Zeltiq, and was developed based on the findings of two doctors in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Dieter Manstein and Dr. R. Rox Anderson of Harvard Medical School and the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital were inspired by “popsicle panniculitis,” a phenomenon of fat loss in children’s cheeks due to frequent ice and popsicle eating. They then used this information to create a controlled cooling technology that could be applied to specific areas on the body, which led to the CoolSculpting treatment we know and love today!

CoolSculpting Today

Since the treatments’ launch, the technology has become even more innovative, convenient and successful. New handpieces have allowed for even more areas of the body to be treated with controlled cooling, such as the inner and outer thighs, abdomen, back, bra fat area, arms and even chin! Now, there are opportunities for DualSculpting, which allow for patients to be treated with multiple handpieces in one sitting (dependent on if the provider has the appropriate equipment – we do!). Finally, the latest advancements have made the treatment even more comfortable for patients. During treatment, patients can watch Netflix, check email, or even take a nap!

CoolSculpting at the Cosmetic Enhancement Center of New England

At CEC, we have a team of amazing providers who have all attended CoolSculpting University, and have rich experience in the treatment. Learn more about our team here! We have been performing the treatment since 2010, and were the first practice to introduce CoolSculpting to Maine. Interested in learning more about freezing your fat with no downtime? Give us a call! This August we are offering a CoolSculpting special of buy three treatments, get one free.

P.S. putting popsicles all over your body won’t work…trust us!

Firm It Up This Summer with Ultherapy!

Ultherapy® in Portland, ME

Ultherapy® in Portland, ME

When you think of cosmetic treatments that can help you look and feel younger, what comes to mind? You may think of Botox, fillers, or facial treatments…but did you know sound waves can help with anti-aging? You heard that right – one of our favorite non-invasive skin tightening treatments is Ultherapy (which we showcased in our most recent Facebook Live Video – here!). Listen in, because we sat down with Shirley, M.E., to learn all about the treatment!

What is Ultherapy?

Ultherapy is a non-invasive, FDA approved a treatment that uses ultrasound to lift and tighten sagging skin on the face, neck, and décolletage (upper chest area). This treatment deposits ultrasound energy below the skin’s surface to encourage collagen production in the area.

Who is a good candidate for Ultherapy?

Almost anyone can be a good match for Ultherapy! It is a great treatment for those who are experiencing a lack of volume and sagging skin. While Ultherapy is not a replacement for surgery, it is a great alternative who those looking for a non-invasive, skin tightening procedure. This is also a great treatment option for younger patients who want to get ahead of aging.

How long does a treatment take?

The length of the treatment depends on the area being treated and your individual treatment plan. For example, a first-time patient having Ultherapy can expect to be here for about 40 minutes if they’re treating their jawline.

Is the treatment painful?

Comfort thresholds vary from patient to patient but there can be some discomfort while the ultrasound energy is being delivered. Some patients report a feeling of warmth and tingling during the procedure. We do apply a topical numbing cream before treatment to minimize discomfort for patients.

What can I expect after treatment?

With Ultherapy, there is no downtime! You can resume your regular activities. Your skin may appear flushed at first and some patients may experience slight swelling, tingling, and tenderness to the touch. Like most treatments, bruising can also occur.

When will I see results and how long do they last?

Results will gradually begin to take place over the next 2-3 months as your body is naturally producing collagen back into the treated area and continue to improve through six months post-treatment. Results vary as everyone’s natural aging process is different but results typically last up to two years. We recommend a “maintenance” treatment at the 12-month mark to keep up with results.

As always, we offer complimentary consultations. Please call us today (207) 747-3560 to learn more about Ultherapy from our expert clinical staff!

Sculptra: Subtle and Gradual Volume

Sculptra® in Portland, ME

Sculptra® in Portland, ME

Sculptra: Subtle and Gradual Volume

When you think of cosmetic injectables, the first thing that comes to mind is probably Botox. However, restoring the youthful appearance of the face goes far beyond wrinkle treatments and dermal fillers. Polylactic acid-based treatments, such as Sculptra Aesthetic, can help to stimulate your skin’s own natural collagen production, thus restoring the volume in your face. To take a deep dive into this treatment and its benefits, we sat down with our Nurse Injector, Ashley!

Q. What is Sculptra and how does it differ from other fillers?

A. Sculptra is an injectable made of Poly-L-Lactic Acid. It’s safe, FDA-approved and is a synthetic form of lactic acid, which your body naturally produces.

Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, Sculptra is a collagen stimulator and results will work gradually over time as the body naturally produces collagen in the treated area.

Q. Am I a good candidate?

A. Everyone is different. Just like with most of our treatments, we create individualized plans that address everyone’s unique needs. With Sculptra, we recommend you come in for a complimentary consultation.

Q. Is more than one treatment necessary?

A. Patients typically need three injection sessions over the course of a few months for a full treatment. Results can last up to two years for patients that complete their series of treatments.

Q. What can I expect with treatment?

A. Like most injectables, common side effects include: swelling, bruising, redness and tenderness at the injection site. We will be sure to send you home with all the post-treatment information you need!

Q. How long do results last?

A. Unlike the immediate results of dermal fillers like Vollure or Voluma, Sculptra works subtly and gradually over time for results that can last more than two years. As with all injectables, the longevity depends on the individual and the product used.

If you think Sculptra may be a great option for you, give us a call! We’d be happy to set you up with a complimentary consultation with one of our providers.

No Need to Blush – We are Talking About Cheek Filler!

Voluma® in Portland, ME

Voluma® in Portland, ME

When people think of fillers and injectables, the first thing that comes to mind is Botox and lip filler. However, there are many other filler treatments available that can restore lost volume and help reduce the appearance of aging. If you’ve been watching our Facebook Live videos, you know that our experienced team has rich experience in fillers and what they can do for your appearance.

For this post, we are getting cheeky! The loss of volume in the cheek area can make the face look sunken and aged. At CEC, our go-to cheek filler is Voluma! To learn more about this filler, we sat down with our own, Audrey Forastiere, R.N!

Why Voluma?

Voluma is a great filler option for the cheeks because it provides instantly results and lasts up to 24 months. Unlike some fillers, it is reversible if a patient has any adverse side effects to the treatment. Treating patients in the cheek area helps to create a more youthful appearance in the under-eye and nasal labial fold areas.

What can I expect with treatment?

A 30-40-minute office visit with minimal downtime. Mild swelling, bruising and tenderness at the injection site is common. Avoiding certain medications and supplements, such as aspirin and fish oil, and taking arnica can also help minimize bruising.

How long do results last?

You can expect to see instant results that continue to improve over the next 2-3 weeks. What I love most about Voluma is that results can last up to 24 months.

Will I experience any pain?

Voluma is mixed with lidocaine (a numbing agent) so many patients find the treatment to be comfortable. If a patient is worried about pain, we can also apply a topical numbing cream before treatment to help with any discomfort from the injection. We also like to ice our patients after the treatment to help minimize discomfort.

Can I go back to normal activities after the treatment?

Makeup can be applied directly after the treatment. I recommend that patients can resume to their regular exercise routines the following day.

Will my results look natural?

Yes! At Cosmetic Enhancement Center our goal is to provide natural looking results to help patients feel and look their best.

As always, we offer free consultations and our clinical team is happy to meet with you to discuss the treatment. Treatments are customized for each individual patient. Schedule your complimentary consultation to determine your customized treatment plan. Call us today at (207) 747-3560 to learn more!

Turn Back the Hands of Time!

Radiesse Before and After Pictures Portland, ME

Radiesse Before and After Pictures Portland, ME

When people come to our office, they typically associate our offerings with enhancements for the face. However, our experienced team of clinicians is highly-trained in making every part of the body enhanced and refreshed…including hands!

As we age, signs of hyperpigmentation and loss of volume can give away your age. To help restore lost volume in the hands, we use a dermal filler called Radiesse! Currently, Radiesse is the only FDA-approved filler to safe and effectively correct lost volume in hands. Here is what our process looks like:

1. Prior to the appointment, we ask our patients to consider taking arnica tablets to help minimize bruising.
2. We apply a topical numbing cream to minimize any discomfort from the injection.
3. Once the Radiesse in injected, we massage the product into the desired areas.
4. Patients will notice more fullness instantly, but full results take 2-3 weeks. This is because the filler stimulates your body’s own natural collagen production.
5. As always with dermal fillers, common side effects include mild swelling, tenderness and bruising that will subside in 3-5 days. Following the treatment, we recommend that our patients avoid certain medications such as aspirin.
6. Hand rejuvenation can last up 12-18 months, and even longer in some patients.
