BOTOX® & Dysport™

botox_cosmetic_logoFacial lines and wrinkles are the result of muscle movement (i.e. laughing, worrying, frowning, squinting) and facial muscle contraction over time. These are easily treated by the use of Botox® and Dysport™. Botox® and Dysport™ are injected into the muscles that cause facial lines to temporarily reduce the contractions of the underlying muscles, which, in turn, reduces and smoothes the appearance of surface and deep wrinkles.

The desired effects of Botox® and Dysport™, however, are not permanent. In most cases after about three to four months, the nerve will recover and cause the muscles to become active again. At this point, the patient will require a repeat injection of Botox® or Dysport™.

The injections are safe, easy and typically cause minimal discomfort which passes immediately after the injection. The entire procedure takes approximately 10 minutes. Results are typically apparent within 3 to 10 days of the procedure. Many patients achieve satisfying results in a single injection session. Some individuals with deeper facial lines may require more than one session to achieve maximum results.

Botox® has been available since 1989, originally for treatment of muscle spasm. It was then FDA approved in 2002 for wrinkle treatments. Dysport™ was not FDA approved for use in the United States until April 30, 2009 but has been available in other countries for approximately ten years. Both are botulism toxin type A with slightly different chemical structures.

With Botox® or Dysport™, there is no downtime and patients can immediately resume normal daily activities.

Some patients will experience bruising from the injection. To avoid or reduce this, patients should avoid aspirin, vitamin E or blood thinning products prior to the procedure. Headaches, which resolve in 24-48 hours, can occur, but this is rare.
